myrtaSelfAdvocacysmallAction on Disability within Ethnic Communities Inc. (ADEC) is looking for participants or organisations with eligible clients who would be keen to take part in Self-Advocacy skills training. We are happy to come to your organisation or alternatively start a group (6 minimum) within reach of Werribee, Dandenong or Preston.

alphasmOur Senior Advocate and resident public speaker, Dr Alpha Lisimba recently spoke on behalf of ADEC at a conference organised by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV). The Multiculturalism to Inclusion Conference was held at the City of Greater Dandenong on the 31st of August this year. Councillors and council staff attend the conference from municipalities all over the state.

The event’s aim was to bring together local councils, community organisations and government departments to discuss their Diversity, Access and Equity policies and how these polices assist in encouraging more inclusion and citizen participation in Australia.

EdwardsmallerI had the chance this morning to pull aside one of our carers and occasional bus driver, Edward Tadros, for a quick chat. A big joy of this job is having the opportunity to work with people who choose caring as a career. Another joy is finding out some of the stories behind the people.

This joint cultural event was hosted by ADEC's Chinese High Needs group and Karen Carers Group in Werribee. Singers and dancers were volunteers from the community and the traditional food was prepared by the whole group for the other guests to share.
