As an Advocate, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality, person-centred individual advocacy for people with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. The role includes case work, systemic advocacy, outreach, and stakeholder engagement to empower individuals, uphold their rights, and support their participation in the community. The advocate will report to the Interim Manager Advocacy and Community Resilience, and fortnightly working hours are 60.8 over 4 per week.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Individual Advocacy Support
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients’ presenting issues, needs, and strengths.
- Co-develop tailored support plans aligned with clients’ goals, capacity, and resources.
- Apply a strengths-based approach to empower clients to become self-advocates.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders including health providers, community services, and families.
- Manage a case load and provide short-term case management to resolve advocacy issues.
- Facilitate self-advocacy training programs and contribute to capacity-building activities.
- Provide secondary consultation to service providers working with culturally diverse clients.
- Inform clients about their rights and support informed decision-making.
- Deliver timely advocacy assistance in response to discrimination, abuse, or neglect.
Community Outreach
- Engage in relevant service networks and contribute to systemic advocacy efforts.
- Participate in campaigns and initiatives to influence policy and improve service accessibility.
- Present to community groups and professionals to raise awareness of the advocacy program.
- Promote the Advocacy Program within ethnic communities and partner organisations.
Administration
- Maintain detailed case notes and complete administrative documentation in line with audit and contractual requirements.
- Use ADEC’s client management system and other digital tools for service tracking and reporting.
- Contribute to monthly reports, case studies, and internal quality reviews.
- Comply with all relevant legislation, organisational policies, and risk management frameworks.
- Assist with audit preparation and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Undertake project work and other duties as directed by the Advocacy Supervisor.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- Tertiary degree with a minimum of one year in the field’ experience. Other formal qualifications may be considered alongside demonstrated sector experience
- Previous experience of working in advocacy roles and capacity in community services sector.
- Experience of working with people with disability and carers, from ethnic communities.
- Knowledge of service options for people with disability and/or their supports.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and apply legislation, policies and procedures, including the ability to identify issues and problem solve.
- High level interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate, engage and negotiate confidently.
- Excellent written communication and presentation skills.
- Strong administrative and computer skills, including experience working with client and data management systems.
- Excellent coordination and time management skills.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS
- Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Community Development.
- Understanding of systemic barriers faced by people with disability from ethnic backgrounds
- Strong knowledge of the rights of people with disability and relevant legislation.
- Fluency in a second language such as Farsi, Arabic, or Urdu (desirable)
- Capacity to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.

Join our dedicated team as a Disability Support Worker. In this casual role, you will provide compassionate care and support to clients from Greek, Italian, Maltese, Burmese, Arabic and Turkish speaking backgrounds in Melbourne’s Eastern, Northern, Southern & Western Suburbs.
Key Responsibilities
Assist clients with personal care, including showering, dressing, and grooming.
- Help clients with meal preparation, medication management, and light household duties.
- Engage clients in social and recreational activities to promote independence and wellbeing.
- Provide transportation assistance to appointments and community outings.
- Maintain detailed client records and communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team.
- Advocate for clients’ needs and ensure their rights are upheld
Our Ideal Candidate
- Relevant qualifications such as a Certificate III in Individual Support or equivalent and experience ideally in the home care environment.
- Fluency in Greek, Italian, Maltese, Burmese, Arabic or Turkish languages only in addition to English.
- Understanding of the unique cultural needs and preferences of the client communities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Compassionate, patient, and adaptable approach to supporting clients.
- Current First Aid certification and a valid driver’s licence.
