Meryem is 75 years old and originally from Turkey. She has always been independent, but as Alzheimer’s Dementia gradually made everyday tasks more difficult, she found herself relying more on her daughter-in-law, Hediye, who now provides 24-hour support. While Hediye cares for her with love and dedication, balancing the role of a full-time carer can be overwhelming. From the moment they met in July 2024, Meryem and Songul developed a bond that extended far beyond care. “I would give ADEC a 10 without hesitation. Songul is absolutely incredible—she’s not just my support worker; she has become my best friend,” says Meryem. “She understands me in ways no one else does. When I am feeling anxious or overwhelmed, she knows exactly how to calm me down.”
Having a support worker who shares her cultural background has been a source of comfort for Meryem. “Songul is from Turkey, just like me. We speak the same language and understand each other’s traditions and values, creating a warm bond between us.” She appreciates that Songul is not only patient and caring but also takes the time to listen to her stories and show genuine sympathy. “It feels like talking to a close relative who genuinely cares about your wellbeing.”

Hediye, Meryem’s daughter-in-law, recounted a heart-felt story: “There was a moment when Meryem had been sitting in the bathroom for a long time. I tried to encourage her to stand up, but she didn’t respond or follow my instructions. Concerned, I reached out to Songul for help. Songul joined us on FaceTime, and with calmness and care, she gently spoke to Meryem, guiding her step by step. Eventually, Meryem was able to stand up. It was a small yet profound moment that highlighted the depth of their bond.” These moments remind us just how invaluable it is to have someone who truly understands her—someone who knows how to soothe her, remain patient with her, and support her, even from afar.
But the relationship between Meryem and Songul is about more than just care—it’s about bringing joy into everyday life. “She goes above and beyond to make me happy. For instance, she once spent hours playing with play-dough with me, laughing and creating shapes together—it brought back joyful memories. Another time, she baked biscuits with me. And then there was the unforgettable trip to the farm. Songul knew how much I love chickens, so she arranged for us to visit a local farm.”
Songul also made sure Meryem’s birthday was special. “On my birthday, she surprised me with a beautiful cake, and we celebrated together. To me, Songul isn’t just a support worker, she’s my family. Her presence brings light into my days, and I can’t thank her enough for all that she does.”
